Hello again! Hope you’ve all been enjoying this fabulous summer. It’s hard to believe that it’s close to halfway over….in fact, school supplies have already hit the store shelves! It’s a much too vivid reminder to me that I’ll send my first-born off to kindergarten soon…where the bubble I’ve built around her will pop and she’ll be out in the real world, on her own. Sigh. Brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it…

So what’s a mama to do when she’s feeling sad? Go get a cupcake, of course! Who doesn’t love a beautiful, delicious cupcake as a pick-me-up when you’re down (or anytime, for that matter?!) And don’t even try to tell me you don’t like sweets – because I won’t believe you. It’s virtually impossible. I’ll be convinced you’re lying. Or not human. But, I digress.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve most certainly heard of the best cupcake shop around: Flavor Cupcakery. Flavor is located at Tollgate Road in Bel Air, and is owned by local mama and business woman extraordinaire, Shelley Stannard. And while you may have seen the shop, maybe even tasted some of the delectable cupcakes yourself, you probably don’t know how this incredible business venture came to fruition. To me, the story behind the business is almost as fabulous as the cupcakes themselves. Almost.

Shelley is a wife and mother of three children: Lilly (14), Jack (11), and Aidan (8). With a former life as a marketing and advertising professional, Shelley made the decision to stay at home with her kiddos when they were young. Like many stay-at-home moms (myself included), having her children changed everything and she knew that when she decided to re-enter the workforce she’d be doing something entirely different from her previous career. She longed to own her own business – and she wanted to create something beautiful, relaxing, and meaningful for many people. She considered a home decorating business, but with the economy in the state it is she realized that it probably wouldn’t be a lucrative venture. Then a friend mentioned cupcakes, and her wheels began turning

Now here’s the crazy (and my most favorite) part: Shelley was not an avid baker. In fact, she had no experience with cupcakes whatsoever. But the idea appealed to both her creative side and her business savvy. Creating a cupcake shop would satisfy her desire to bring a ‘little bit of comfort’ to Bel Air, and she knew there was an unfilled niche for high-end baked goods. So Shelley turned to the ultimate font of information: the Internet. Along with her sister, she began researching recipes and trying out new flavors in her home. She also turned to other local business owners for support and guidance, and credits them with embracing the idea and encouraging her new venture. With a little bit of trial and error and a whole lot of passion, Flavor Cupcakery was born.

Though Shelley knew she wanted a storefront, she also wanted to hold out for a location that was just right. Instead of putting her business on the back burner and losing momentum while looking, she decided to start getting her delicious product into the community by way of local coffee shops. Word traveled fast and the shops were burning through their cupcake supply after only a few hours each day. By the time Flavor opened its doors in December of 2010, customers were lining the sidewalk just to get a little bit of Flavor for themselves.

Fast forward a year and a half and Flavor has opened its second location in Cockeysville, and is 32 employees strong – and creating those jobs is what Shelley is most proud of. Her role has evolved into one of mainly administration, and she’s turned the baking reins over to her highly skilled and professionally trained pastry chefs and cake designers – most notable being Jason Hisley of Cupcake Wars fame. And oh, by the way – have you heard of that tiny little show on Food Network that Flavor competed on? And won? In reality, saying that they ‘won’ is sort of an understatement. They actually mopped the competition with their delicious and gorgeous creations! While the $10,000 they won certainly helped in opening their second location, what Shelley loves the most about the experience is that it brought such a sense of pride to our community. The same cupcakes that top-notch chefs tasted and judged may also have been at your neighbor’s birthday party. How cool is that?!

What sets Flavor apart from another run of the mill bakery is the labor of love that’s poured into each and every cupcake. They are made from scratch each and every morning with top notch ingredients. Chocolate is flown in from Belgium and Paris and seasonal produce is purchased from local farms. Never frozen or days old, when you bring home a cupcake from Flavor you can guarantee that it was just pulled from the oven that morning. They bake ten classic flavors daily, have two other scheduled flavors that rotate daily, and then throw in a surprise combination just to keep it fresh and fun. These surprise flavors are often customer requests or seasonal favorites – think anything from Margarita to Tres Leches. And while the flavors can be unexpected – exotic even – Shelley says that the customer favorites from day one remain the best sellers: Red Velvet, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Salted Caramel and Black Bottom. (Is your mouth watering yet?)

In addition to cupcakes, Flavor also stocks cake truffles (think a warm cupcake, blended with icing and covered in chocolate) and cake push pops, perfect for the younger set. They’ve also moved into the world of cakes, and boy are they gorgeous! Shelley’s staff can come up with a complement to just about any theme – from an Americana cake topped with fondant hamburger and hot dogs to a 75th birthday cake with yarn and knitting needles! (Check out the photos on their Facebook page for even more ideas!). Flavor’s also begun offering cupcake party boxes, which are so cute and super fun! Since the shop is too tiny to accommodate parties, they’ve made it possible to have a cupcake party on the go. Complete with unfrosted cupcakes, icing in pastry bags and toppings, it’s the perfect accompaniment to a fun birthday celebration.

Through it all, what remains most important to Shelley is the same as what she focused on in the beginning: bringing happiness to people. She wants to continue to provide a high-quality product that tastes good, and that will bring a smile to someone’s face – even if for only the ten minutes it takes to eat a cupcake (though I’m pretty sure I could down one is much less time!). She wants to grow, but wants that growth to be based on developing a great team of people, and to provide them with the opportunity to develop their career with Flavor.

Flavor has brought so much to Bel Air: creativity, comfort, and community pride, disguised in the form of a ridiculously delicious cupcake. Thank you Shelley for going out on a limb to bring your passion to life. We are all so grateful…well, everyone but my thighs. Maybe you can develop a low-cal, low-fat cupcake that’s just as delicious next?!

Want to get some Flavor of your own? Shelley so generously offered to donate half a dozen cupcakes to a selected reader! Simply comment below with:

Oh, two year olds. The illusive yet captivating age for portraits. There is running…chasing…bribing…an extreme amount silly behavior performed by adults in order to coerce such a subject into cooperation. The success, though, is very sweet. Kellan was no different. No matter how hard his parents and I had to try for smiles and….stillness–it was 100 percent worth it for that cute face! Such a treat to work with this family again. They make my job easy!

ENJOY!!

Hello again! I’m so excited to be kicking off our series with one of my very favorite Bel Air destinations, Tiny Toes. I heard about this gem shortly after moving to the area, and in the past four years it’s become my go-to for gifts, special occasion clothing and everything in between!

Owned by the mother-daughter dynamo team Tina Lewis and Karen Jacobs, Tiny Toes has been a staple on Main Street for the past six years. Karen is the mama of two little ones – Ben who is 7 and Charlotte who is 4 – and Tina (aka Mimi) is a proud, doting grandma who will treat your kiddos as if they are her own grandbabies when you bring them into the store.

go ahead,pin this

When Karen was pregnant with Ben, she found herself driving to Columbia and beyond to find the specialty baby products that she was yearning for. Not such a big deal when you’re traveling alone, but after Ben was born Karen quickly found that these hour long trips weren’t so realistic with a baby in tow! During a shopping trip gone bad, she found herself in a bathroom with a diaper blowout, a lack of baby wipes, a crying baby – and a soon-to-be crying mama. She knew then that the days of leisurely shopping excursions were long gone, but she wasn’t ready to give up on getting the products she really wanted. After chatting with some friends, Karen realized that she wasn’t alone – plenty of other local mamas were looking for the same specialty items too. She schemed with her mom Tina, who had a background in retail, and a month before Ben’s first birthday Tiny Toes opened their doors.

Many local mamas (myself included) frequent Tiny Toes for Tea Collection clothing, as they are a Tea Destination store. If you haven’t yet discovered this brand, run – don’t walk – and check it out right away! I love so much about Tea– its versatility, its comfort, its colors and prints – and the fact that it offers so many options for coordinating clothes among siblings without making them too matchy-matchy (and yes, that’s an official fashion term). Since Tiny Toes is an official Destination Store, they carry the entire product line and work closely with the company on merchandising and on understanding the product’s story. They offer special events featuring the brand such as trunk shows showing off the upcoming season’s line and even had Emily Myers, one of Tea’s founders, visit the store for one-on-one styling sessions.

go ahead,pin this
While I am loyal to Tea, I’ve begun to break out of the box a little bit to explore some other lines that Tiny Toes offers – and I’m loving what I’ve found! Pink Chicken is a new favorite for my girls – lots of bright colors with easy silhouettes that are very wearable. Appaman is a little boy staple – its pieces have a skater vibe with a slightly preppy flair – and are so darn cute. Looking at their tiny little monkey shirt is almost enough to make me want to endure months of a screaming newborn and sleepless nights, just for the chance to have a little boy that might wear this shirt one day. Almost.

go ahead,pin thisgo ahead,pin thisgo ahead,pin this

Another personal favorite are the ‘…Rocks’ shirt line: Preschool Rocks, Kindergarten Rocks – and now, Camp Rocks! These have pretty much become a rite of passage for my little ones – in fact, my five year old is already talking about when she’ll wear her Kindergarten Rocks shirt this fall. Because of their popularity, Tiny Toes has now added boy shirts to the line – minus a bit of the bling, of course. This is THE perfect gift for the six and under set – they are guaranteed to love it! I promise.

go ahead,pin this

Beyond clothing, Tiny Toes also offers a great assortment of toys and gift options. My standard for any new mama is a CD from the Rockabye Baby line – think rock songs with a classical music twist. Artists from Madonna to Dave Matthews Band to Depeche Mode have had some of their greatest hits ‘lullabye-d’ – and as any mama knows, it is pretty much vital to have some nursery music that you can tolerate. It’s guaranteed to be playing in your ears –or at the very least your head – through the wee hours of the night for many, many months.

go ahead,pin this

Another great gift option are Itzy RitzyWet Bags – at under $20, they’re easy on the wallet and can be used for a multitude of things. From cloth diapers to wet swimsuits to snacks, these bags are washable, waterproof, lead and PVC free and immensely practical – so they can be purposed for just about anything!

go ahead,pin this

Two of Lindsay’s favorite things in the store to date are the new, adorable “Charm It” jewelry line, and of course Monkey Bar Buddies! For any of us gals that grew up in the 80s, these necklaces and bracelets by “Charm It” put us in an instant time machine to share with all of our little girls and their friends (but much cooler than what we had)! They even come in ready made sets for gifting! Monkey Bar Buddies, well, they speak for themselves. If you have a dress loving lady, but you worry about her playing, running and just plain ol’sitting like a little girl does (sometimes showing parts that shouldn’t be seen), Monkey Bar Buddies come in an array of colors to go under just about any dress. Would you believe they even have a few pairs that sparkle? So FUN!!

go ahead,pin thisgo ahead,pin this

Tiny Toes also offers some great events and promos for their customers – from trunk shows to carseat checks to free mini photo sessions with none other than the fabulous Lindsay Parks (you may have heard of her) – there is always something extra being offered to customers. They’re also a part of the Downtown Alliance and sponsors of the Outdoor Movie Series that happens during the summer (if you haven’t yet check those out – hurry up – they begin June 8th–TONIGHT).

Products and events aside, I really believe that what makes a store is the service – and the service you’ll get here is second to none. Always attentive and always knowledgeable, Karen, Tina and their staff are quick to offer suggestions or look for a specific size for their customers. One of my favorite perks is the play area they have set up for our little ones – they play while we shop. Genius!

Tiny Toes offers the unique, fashion forward pieces you’d find in any big city boutique, but brings them to us with a homey, small-town feel. The best of both worlds – what else could you want? Well…maybe some sort of magic potion to ward off temper tantrums. Karen – can you look into that? 😉

Now onto the even better stuff!

This is Ashton….
If I had to do an acrostic poem with his name:

Ashton has AVM… AVM (Arterial Venous Malformation). As his mom cites, “I am now an AVM expert, but it is one word I wish I never learned. We all have arteries and the blood flows quickly through the arteries. Arteries lead to capillaries which slow the blood flow down before it reaches the veins. Ashton does not have the capillaries and the area where the capillaries are supposed to be is malformed, hence Arterial-Venous Malformation or AVM. Ashton does not have 1, but 4-5. Unfortunately, AVMs are more common than we originally thought but he has numerous and his are very involved and large. It was determined that they are not able to fix or operate on them because they are so diffuse and deep within the brain. Having an AVM causes other problems and puts him at risk for a stroke but they felt that attempting to fix them could cause more problems.”

Wow, right? By the way, Ashton’s incredible Mom has written a little history if you will about her awesome son…and you can read that here.

This session was arranged through a pretty neat organization called Inspiration Through Art (and if you click on that link you can read more about them as well). We (Ashton’s Mom and I) have quite a few mutual friends however, so I had already been following Ashton and his story. I was so excited when she contacted me to do this session!

If one thing stuck out to me at this particular session, it was the LOVE. I mean, look at Ashton and the way he cares for his little brother Jonah. Do you see the happiness on his face when his mom is kissing him? The pictures radiate how special their bond is, and THAT is truly something i couldn’t pose or “make” happen. I am just there to capture it–so that is just what I did!

I think his mom Betsy says it best, “I certainly won’t claim that our life is easy or that I didn’t wish my child was normal. He has gotten stared at, made fun of, and even followed so people could get a look at the veins on his face. It breaks my heart that this little boy that has been through so much gets stared at sometimes made fun of by other children and even adults. However, he never lets it get him down and responds with, ‘this is how God made me.’ In my eyes there is a big difference between being curious and mean. I prayed and prayed that he would live to see his 1st birthday and he is 7!! Each year, each day, each hour with him is a blessing and we are blessed to be his parents. He did not walk until almost 2 years of age. The joy that we felt is immeasurable. Looking at this child who suffered so much take his first steps is a feeling I could not describe. I dream of watching him ride a bike and graduating. I dream of the bright future filled with joy and happiness. I don’t care what he does as long as he is safe, happy, and healthy.”

Enjoy this peek of Ashton and his biggest blessings…..and please read his story when you have a moment. It’s worth listening to.

  • Dana ascenzi - What a beautiful story. This family actually lives in the same development as we do and have said hi in passing from time to time. I always wondered what his condition was but, would never have asked and made certain never to make him feel as if we were staring. It looks like to spite his diagnosis he is a loving, and beautiful little boy. Lindsay, you always seem to capture special moments and these pictures are just incredible. They are really exceptional.ReplyCancel

  • Toni Mingioni - Ashton is a patient in the pediatric office where I work. When Ashton walks in the door for a visit he just brings a smile to my face. I have never met a more loving family then the Dean’s. No matter what kind of day they are having they always have a smile on their faces and very kind words to say to everyone. I feel so very blessed to know these wonderful people and their story has touched my heart deeply. I pray everyday for God to keep Ashton in his loving care, and to allow him to grow into a fine young man and to be able do all the things that make him happy. Ashton has certainly touched my heart and he is truely my inspiration.

My love to the Dean Family!ReplyCancel
